Zone training seems to be all the rage. Even David Goggins talks about doing a his long runs in zone 2 to build up his aerobic base, allowing him to accomplish the insane feats he is so well known for.
This was my first attempt at zone training (taken from the triathlon plan I’ll be following from May):
10 mins Z2
7 x (5 mins Z4 + 2 mins Z2)
5 mins Z2
So what did I learn?
One – focusing on my heart rate and the intervals really made time fly. The max I’ve been able to run on a treadmill is 30 minutes as I just get too bored but this time I managed 50.
Two – getting back down to Z2 after being in Z4 is hard! I basically had to walk and even then it took me at least a minute everytime. Not sure whether this will get easier with practice.
